The dream was an updated kitchen (and home) big enough to accommodate a growing family.

In order to do so, the kitchen was moved into the adjacent toy room, and the wall between the two rooms was removed to open up the space. The kitchen, which initiated the entire home remodeling project, acquired a sleek black 7-foot Aga range within a tiled alcove.

The double Sub-Zero refrigerator and freezer are hidden in a walnut armoire with forged pulls and a built-in china closet within French doors.

The island base has an aged finish, a SileStone countertop and is just steps away from the breakfast area, connected by a stained checkered floor. Just off the breakfast area is a white coffee/wet bar with Dacor coffee maker and additional cabinet space.

From the kitchen and breakfast nook, the open floor plan leads to the sun room addition. The 14-foot by 16-foot addition is framed by the kitchen with a sweeping arched opening.

The stained checkered flooring extends from the kitchen into the sun room, which also has a boxed-beam ceiling with grass paper.

Large cottage windows with transoms and French doors (with built-up custom casing and trim) lead to a 12-foot-deep wraparound porch that covers all three sides of the sun room.

Exposed cedar rafters, pin board roof sheathing and Tendura deck boards make this deck useable and beautiful, especially with the lights illuminating it at night. It also features a gas fireplace, plasma TV and barbecue area and extends down to a sunbathing deck. The existing pool area by the new porch remains a popular place for the whole family.

The formal dining room and piano room both feature faux-marbled columns with an archway connecting the two rooms.

The piano room has a full-width china hutch, and the dining room displays a 2-inch transition in the ceiling, framing the table (accompanied by richly detailed armless chairs), chandelier and can lights.

The room was also upgraded with new wood floors. The main family room, like many others, has new everything: fireplace, wood mantel, wood wainscoting, custom-glazed painted finishes, lighting and wood floors.

The master bathroom features an impressive before-and-after — from wild wallpaper to tile wainscot with soft, pastel blues in a glass tile band.

Custom, double vanity cabinets, pedestal sinks and tile backsplash accompany the new walk-in shower, claw foot tub with arched top window above, stone tile floors and heated towel bar.

The exterior that encases the new and much-improved home had to match the beauty within. Replacing the white siding is new Hardie siding with a fresh coat of earthy brown paint, along with brand new windows, shutters, gutters and front porch.

This remodel has turned the 1970s east Kansas City home into an entertaining mecca, capable of hosting any event from family dinners to holiday celebrations.
