Luxury

The kitchens of today aren't the cooking spaces of years past. 'At some point in time, somebody decided we should take down our walls to make the connection and see the kitchen plainly from the couch,' says Kristeen Armstrong-Scott, CKD, of Armstrong Kitchens. Whether you literally can or not, designs from the rest of the home have flowed into the kitchen to make it a favorite gathering and entertainment space for families. As the walls have come down, the level of style has gone up. Products and materials must be functional and beautiful. Customization is highly important as homeowners strive to find unique options that give their space unbelievable personality and style.

Technology

While expected in an office or family room, technology has made landfall in the kitchen. Innovative creations that enhance a kitchen's functionality are making your job at home easier. Donna Kirsopp of Schloegel Design Remodel says the key to utilizing technology is to find high-level and high-quality products that will be sustainable in the future. Kristeen Armstrong-Scott agrees: "Not only do homeowners want to be responsible with products installed in their homes, but they want products that will stand the test of time in both quality and economy."

Convenience

Every homeowner is the king or queen of his or her castle. Unfortunately, not every home is the size of a castle. Regardless of the size of a space, it's important to utilize it correctly. "Every inch is valuable," says Kathy Euston of Euston Kitchen Co., especially if your kitchen doesn't have the dimensions of your dreams. Generic, wasted space is being eliminated in lieu of everything from hidden shelves to widened aisles; each corner and every niche can be customized to desire. Who couldn't use more convenience in life?

Uniqueness

The resale factor is a valid consideration when you're designing your own kitchen. But while granite countertops, wood cabinetry and integrated appliances are lovely products, sometimes you just want something different, an item or two that not everyone else on the block has in their home. Donna Kirsopp of Schloegel Design Remodel calls it the "wow" factor. "Every room should have one element that becomes the focal point. It can’t all be vanilla," she says. "Whether it's a vault, light fixture or little niche, find something that makes someone stop and say 'that is cool.'"
